Eid ul-Fitra 2026 – Sighting of Moon
Moon Sighting for 1st Shawwal 1447AH – 2026
Alhamdollilah, we are blessed with the wonderful opportunity to nearly complete another Holy month of Ramadhan.
Eid ul-Fitra 2026
For Ayatollah Khamenei followers:
Eid will be Saturday 21st March.
Du’a Nudba @ 6.30am
Eid Prayer @ 7am followed by khutba
For Ayatollah Sistani followers:
Eid will most likely be Sunday 22nd March.
Du’a Nudba @ 6.30am
Eid Prayer @ 7am followed by khutba
The following comments are in according with the rulings of His Eminence Sayed Ali Sistani:
The sighting of the moon on and around the 20th of March will be very difficult, and even the Sydney Observatory has placed significant conditions on the sighting. (https://powerhouse.com.au/stories/sky-guide-february-2026#special-event) In light of the difficult sighting conditions and for the precaution we are expecting Eid to be on Sunday 22nd March 2026.
We have been advised that jurisprudentially the day that you’re not sure whether it is the last day of Shahr Ramadhan or Eid day, you should fast and complete the month 30 days. So, even if we are doubtful, still you are bound to fast on Saturday.
However, it is possible that the office of Ayatollah Sistani announces Saturday as Eid for the whole of Australia. because of the possibility of moonsighting in some parts of it, for two reasons:
- This has occurred previously.
- The Sydney observatory which suggests that on the evening of Fri. 20 March, the crescent may be visible in some very northern parts of NSW under perfect condition. https://powerhouse.com.au/stories/sky-guide-february-2026#special-event. Pleases, note that even the observatory doesn’t confirm, rather says ‘may be’ (that means no astronomical confirmation).
If the office of Ayatollah. Sistani is informed that astronomers say the moon possibly is visible in some parts of Australia, it is possible that the office announces Saturday as Eid for the whole of Australia.
We will advise as soon as we have information at hand. This difficult sighting situation does occur once every few years. Updates will be made posted on our social media pages and other communication outlets as soon as they become available.
